Statistics related to the endocrine system

Consider the following statistics, as they relate to the endocrine system:

  • About 210,000 people with acute pancreatitis are admitted to hospitals in the United States each year.

  • The American Diabetes Association estimates that about 30 million people in the U.S. have diabetes. It's one of the most expensive diseases in the U.S, with an annual cost of $245 billion.

  • Osteoporosis affects 40 million people in the U.S.. It causes 2 million broken bones every year, with related treatment costs of $19 billion, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

  • Hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) affects nearly 5% of the U.S. population over age 12. It occurs much more frequently in women than in men. It's also more likely to happen in people over 60 years of age.

  • Hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) affects about 1% of the U.S. population. It occurs more frequently in women, and prevalence increases with age.

  • About 210,000 people with acute pancreatitis are admitted to hospitals in the U.S. each year.

  • Hyperparathyroidism, in which the parathyroid is overactive, affects about 100,000 adults in the U.S.

  • Addison's disease and Cushing's syndrome are rare diseases that involve the adrenal glands.
