Diuretic

An agent that promotes the excretion of urine. Commonly administered drugs that act as diuretics (water pills) include furosemide (Lasix) and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ). Diuretics are frequently given to patients with edema (fluid retention) and hypertension (high blood pressure).
