Thrush and the Newborn

Oral thrush, also known as candidiasis, is a yeastlike fungal infection that can occur in newborns and in people with weakened immune systems. Oral thrush is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, which is normally found on the skin or in mucous membranes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms of thrush include cracks in the corners of the mouth and white or yellow areas on the lips, tongue and palate.
