Lanthanum Carbonate chewable tablets

What are lanthanum carbonate chewable tablets?

LANTHANUM CARBONATE (Fosrenol®) helps decrease the amount of phosphate in your blood that may build up due to kidney disease. Generic lanthanum carbonate chewable tablets are not available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive lanthanum carbonate?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • stomach or intestinal problems (such as stomach or intestinal obstruction, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or peptic ulcer disease)

  • an unusual reaction to lanthanum carbonate, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Chew the Lanthanum carbonate chewable tablets completely, then swallow. The chewable tablets should never be swallowed whole. Take this medicine with meals. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with Lanthanum Carbonate?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking Lanthanum Carbonate?

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. If you have bothersome stomach problems, feel unusually tired or weak, become confused or irritable, or develop a headache that does not get better.

Make sure to take this medicine with or immediately after meals. Adhering to the diet prescribed by your physician will help with the phosphate-lowering benefits of this medicine.

  • drowsiness, dizziness, or fainting spells

  • confusion or irritability

  • nausea, vomiting

  • loss of appetite
